Here are definitions for common parts found in heavy machinery:
The piston is a component of reciprocating engines. It is contained in a cylinder and is made gas-tight by piston rings. It moves up and down in the cylinder to compress gases and transmit force. Location: Inside the cylinder block.
A cylinder liner (or sleeve) is a cylindrical part placed in the engine block to form the cylinder. It provides a hard-wearing surface for the piston and rings. Location: Inserted into the engine block.
A piston ring is a split ring that fits into a groove on the outer diameter of a piston. It serves to seal the combustion chamber, support heat transfer, and regulate oil consumption. Location: In the grooves of the piston.
Also known as a big-end bearing, it is a split plain bearing used on the connecting rod where it journals to the crankshaft. Location: Between the connecting rod and the crankshaft.
The crankshaft translates the linear motion of the pistons into rotational motion. Location: In the lower part of the engine block.
A fuel injector sprays diesel fuel into the combustion chamber at the precise moment for ignition. Location: In the cylinder head, with the nozzle tip in the combustion chamber.
A turbocharger is a forced induction device that uses exhaust gases to spin a turbine, which in turn spins a compressor to force more air into the cylinders. Location: Attached to the exhaust and intake manifolds.
The water pump circulates coolant through the engine, radiator, and hoses to maintain optimal operating temperature. Location: Mounted on the front of the engine block, driven by a belt.
The oil pump circulates engine oil under pressure to the bearings, pistons, and camshaft to lubricate and cool them. Location: Typically inside the oil pan, driven by the crankshaft.
The cylinder head sits on top of the cylinder block, closing the top of the cylinders to form the combustion chambers. It also houses the valves, injectors, and camshafts. Location: Atop the engine block.
Komatsu PC300-7 Excavator with SAA6D114E Engine
The engine experiences rapid overheating, and coolant is being lost from the expansion tank overflow.
This symptom often points to over-pressurization of the cooling system, which is caused by combustion gases entering the coolant. The most common causes are a failed cylinder head gasket or a cracked cylinder liner. A cracked liner, such as a Komatsu 6710-21-2210, can develop a micro-fracture that opens under high temperature and pressure, allowing coolant into the combustion chamber (visible as white smoke) or combustion gas into the coolant jacket.
Initial Diagnosis: Perform a bubble test. With the engine running and radiator cap off, look for a constant stream of bubbles in the coolant, indicating gas leakage.
Pressure Test: Conduct a cooling system pressure test to see if it holds pressure. Also, test the radiator cap to ensure it holds the correct pressure.
Disassembly: If tests confirm a leak, begin engine disassembly. Remove the cylinder head.
Inspection: Carefully inspect the cylinder head gasket for any breaks or compromised fire rings. Check the cylinder head and engine block surfaces for warping using a straight edge.
Component Testing: Send the cylinder head to a machine shop for pressure testing to check for cracks.
Liner Inspection: Carefully inspect all cylinder liners (sleeves) for vertical cracks or signs of pitting. A dye penetrant test can reveal fractures invisible to the naked eye.
Replacement: Replace all faulty components. This includes the head gasket, any cracked or warped cylinder heads, and any compromised cylinder liners.
Reassembly: Reassemble the engine using new gaskets and seals. Ensure all bolts are torqued to the manufacturer's exact specifications in the correct sequence. Refill the cooling system and check for leaks.
