Tappet/Follower: Located in the Engine Block (Camshaft Area). Transfers the motion of the camshaft lobe to the pushrod. (Cummins NTA855 Engine - Valve Tappet)
Track Adjuster: Located in the Undercarriage (Track Frame). Uses grease/hydraulic pressure to maintain track tension. (Komatsu PC450-8 Excavator - Track Adjuster Assembly)
Main Relief Valve: Located in the Hydraulic Pump or Control Valve. Limits the maximum pressure in the hydraulic system. (Caterpillar D8R Dozer - Hydraulic Relief Valve)
Starter Motor: Mounted on the Flywheel Housing. Uses electrical power to crank the engine for starting. (Isuzu 6WG1 Engine - Starter Motor)
Fuel Shutoff Solenoid: Located on the Fuel Pump/Injection System. Stops fuel flow to shut down the diesel engine. (Kubota V3307 Engine - Fuel Shutoff Solenoid)
Alternator: Mounted on the Engine Block. Generates electrical power to charge the battery and run accessories. (Yanmar 4TNV98 Engine - Alternator)
Fan Hub: Located at the Front of the Engine. Holds and drives the cooling fan. (Weichai WP10 Engine - Fan Hub Bearing)
Exhaust Manifold: Attached to the Cylinder Head. Collects exhaust gases from the cylinders and directs them to the turbo/muffler. (Cummins QSK60 Engine - Exhaust Manifold)
Pinion Gear: Located in the Transmission/Final Drive. A small gear that meshes with a larger one to change torque/speed. (Caterpillar 140M Grader - Pinion Gear)
Load Sensing Valve: Located in the Hydraulic System (Control Valve). Adjusts pump output based on hydraulic load demand. (Komatsu PC200-8 Excavator - Load Sensing Valve)
Fault Symptom: The Cat C32 engine is experiencing Excessive Oil Consumption accompanied by Heavy Blue Smoke from the exhaust.
Common Causes & Solution:
Cause 1: Failed Oil Control Rings. The oil control Piston Rings are worn, broken, or clogged, allowing oil to pass into the combustion chamber. Solution: Measure cylinder compression and check for excessive blowby. An engine top-end overhaul is required to replace the Piston Ring Set and potentially the Cylinder Liner.
Cause 2: Valve Stem Seal Wear. Oil is leaking past the valve stem seals and into the combustion chamber when the engine is running or decelerating. Solution: Inspect valve stem seals in the Cylinder Head. Replace all valve stem seals to prevent further oil ingress.
Cause 3: Turbocharger Seal Failure. The turbine or compressor seals in the Turbocharger Unit are leaking oil into the intake or exhaust system. Solution: Inspect the turbo inlet and outlet for signs of oil. Replace the turbo cartridge or the entire unit if the seal is compromised.
