Technical Knowledge: Parts Glossary & Component Locations

• Turbocharger: Located on the exhaust manifold. Example: Caterpillar 320D C6.4 Turbocharger. It increases engine power by forcing extra air into the combustion chamber.

• Piston: Located inside the cylinder block. Example: Komatsu PC200-8 6D107 Piston. It transfers force from expanding gas to the crankshaft.

• Crankshaft: Located at the bottom of the engine block. Example: Cummins 6BT5.9 Crankshaft. It converts linear motion into rotational motion.

• Fuel Injector: Mounted in the cylinder head. Example: Isuzu 4HK1 Common Rail Injector. It atomizes fuel for efficient combustion.

• Water Pump: Attached to the front of the engine. Example: Kubota V2203 Water Pump. It circulates coolant to prevent overheating.

• Main Relief Valve: Located on the control valve bank. Example: Komatsu PC300-7 Main Relief Valve. It limits the maximum pressure in the hydraulic circuit.

• Oil Cooler: Usually located near the radiator or oil filter. Example: Yanmar 4TNV98 Oil Cooler. It lowers the temperature of engine oil.

• Solenoid Valve: Found near the hydraulic pumps or fuel system. Example: Caterpillar E320C Flameout Solenoid. It controls fluid flow or engine shutdown.

• Cylinder Head: Sits on top of the cylinder block. Example: Weichai WD615 Cylinder Head. It houses valves and spark plugs/injectors.

• Flywheel: Attached to the rear of the crankshaft. Example: Isuzu 6BG1 Flywheel. It stores rotational energy and smoothens engine pulses.
