Common Faults and Solutions
Machine Fault: Komatsu PC200-7 Excavator Slow Hydraulic Operation
Symptoms: The machine is running, but all hydraulic functions (boom, arm, bucket, and swing) are very slow and weak. Engine sounds normal.
Possible Causes and Diagnostic Steps:
Check Hydraulic Oil Level: The simplest check. Ensure the hydraulic oil is at the correct level in the sight glass when the machine is in the correct position (arm and bucket extended). Low oil can cause pump cavitation and slow operation.
Check Hydraulic Filters: A clogged hydraulic filter (main or pilot) can restrict flow. Check maintenance records. If in doubt, replace the filters.
Check Pilot Pressure: The joysticks (pilot controls) send low-pressure signals to the main pumps. If this pilot pressure is low, the main pumps will not "stroke" correctly to produce full flow. Connect a gauge to the pilot pressure port.
Check Main Pump Pressure (Main Relief): Connect a hydraulic gauge to the main pump output ports. Operate a function (like arm curl) and stall it. The pressure should rise to the specified relief setting (e.g., 350-380 kg/cm2).
Common Solution:
If the main relief pressure is low, the main relief valve may be dirty, stuck, or worn. The main relief valve is typically located on the main control valve block. Carefully remove it, inspect for debris, and clean it. Check the O-rings for damage. Reinstall and re-test. If the pressure is still low, the valve itself (or the main pump) may be worn out. A worn Komatsu main hydraulic pump (e.g., a 708-2L-00460 series) will not be able to build pressure and flow, resulting in slow operation. In this case, a pump rebuild or replacement is necessary.
